Secret Project part 2, win Softube compressors, Glenn Rosenstein interview etc.

January 2010

Last month we hinted about the Secret Project we've been working on for the last four years. Like we said earlier, the product will be released at NAMM by another company (one of great fame and reputation!) and it will be an announcement that few will miss... Just days away now!

By the way, the coffee machine picture from last month was totally random, here's another one that may or may not have something to do with the actual product!

And no, contrary to what the rumors say, the name of the mystery company does not begin with a "T"...

Win Softube compressors!

Swedish magazine Musiker Magasinet is having a competition sponsored by Softube. The prizes are three packages containing Softube's state-of-the-art compressors - FET Compressor and Tube-Tech CL 1B.

For those of you who understand Swedish, enter the competition now! MM Competition

Glenn Rosenstein on FET Compressor - "I love it, I absolutely love it"

Born and raised in New York City, Glenn Rosenstein began his music career at the legendary Power Station recording studio, assisting alongside some of the best and brightest producers, engineers and artists in the business. Honing his craft at New York's historic Sigma Sound, Glenn became a highly sought-after mixer and remix engineer, creating work for such artists as U2, Madonna, Talking Heads, The Ramones, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam and many others. We mananged to get a moment of Glenn's time and asked him about his work and what he thinks about our FET Compressor.

Meet Softube at NAMM!

Visit us at our booth and check out our new products, ask us about 56k development or just hang out! Oh, and the Secret Project product will be on display there too...

Speaking of secrets, we will announce another new co-branded Softube product at NAMM that we can't talk about yet either, all we can say it's that it's an emulation and bears the name of an extremely exclusive unit. Come by our booth and we'll show you!

Softube gets Editors Choice

Softube has won the Editors Choice Award 2009 in German magazine Professional Audio Musik & Equipment for Vintage Amp Room!

Vintage Amp Room has actually been out since 2007, so it's great to see that it's now more relevant than ever!

Softube answers

In our last newsletter we invited all of you to ask the minds of Softube a question to be answered in our coming newsletter. We got a lot of interesting questions and here's one from Matthias Wurm that we will answer at this time:

"Plugins have come a long way and became better and better. Now, at the end of 2009, we have such amazing sounding plugins like the CL 1B. So what do you think, will the sound quality of plugins still increase or are we already on top of what is possible with bits and bytes?"

Thank you Matthias for your question! It's hard for us to make general statements about plug-in quality, since each plug-in manufacturer has a different base of know-how and algorithms, but there does seem to be an overall tendency of plug-in quality improvement. For Softube, increasing processing power means that it will be possible to create more replicas of more complicated gear. In the case of the CL 1B, the difference between the hardware unit and software plug-in is already smaller than the difference between two hardware units we worked with, so we can't really get further.

In some cases quality can be improved even with existing plug-ins by working at 88 kHz or higher, which will probably become more common as computers become more powerful. This has to do with improved filter accuracy for high frequencies, but depends on the exact implementation of the plug-in in question.

Keep the questions coming and we'll answer one more in our next newsletter! Just send us an email with your question.
