The Trident A-Range equalizer is a legendary piece of equipment. As only thirteen A-Range consoles were ever made, it remains a holy grail for sound engineers and producers around the world that hope to create works of art equal to those that were originally recorded on the A-Range - David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Queen, Elton John, the list goes on ...

It is sometimes said that one of the disadvantages of digital mixing and recording is that the happy accidents one could experience with analog gear just don't happen in the DAW. People saying that clearly haven't tried Softube's Trident A-Range equalizer.

I am pleased to say that this is an incredibly accurate software recreation of my original A-Range design.

Professor Malcolm Toft, Original designer of the A-Range console at Trident Audio Developments

Because the Trident A-Range is not only a tremendously nice sounding and highly characteristic equalizer. Its four frequency bands also have a way of integrating in sometimes rather unpredictable ways. More often than not you will find that the equalizer ends up giving you something even better than you may have expected when you made a certain setting. In this sense, the Trident A-Range is more of a musical instrument than a strictly scientific tool. We think this is one of the major reasons it has been used on so many great classic rock albums and why it's still one of the most coveted pieces of audio equipment around.

When I tried the Softube Trident A-Range equalizer plug-in for the first time, a big smile came upon my face. It was just like getting my desk back again. It sounds exactly as I'm used to hearing the EQ.

Flemming Rasmussen, Producer/Mixer/Engineer, Metallica, Richie Blackmore, Morbid Angel, Blind Guardian etc.

Only thirteen A-Range consoles were ever built, and the Softube plug-in version is a very exact model of channel 15 of the Trident A-Range at Sweet Silence Studio 'B' in Denmark. This is producer Flemming Rasmussen's favorite channel for recording lead vocals. Flemming also used it for the solo and rhythm guitars on Metallica's "Ride The Lightning" and "Master of Puppets", as well as Ritchie Blackmore's guitar on the Rainbow albums "Difficult to Cure" and "Bent out of Shape".

The A-Range channel features four bands of equalization plus high and low pass filters. By driving the console hot, it is possible to get it to distort with a hairy and effective saturation that is just right in some situations, and just wrong in others! We added a separate Saturation control to let you choose easily. Turn it down for clean (and less CPU draw), and up for the sound of a Trident A-Range hard at work.

I have used an original analog Trident A-Range channel strip, so I've been able to compare the hardware to the plug-in and there's just no difference.

Michael Wagener, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Dokken, Alice Cooper, etc.

In Short

  • EQ with a will of its own
  • Created together with original designer Professor Malcolm Toft
  • Each and every component carefully modeled
  • Saturation control
  • Very CPU friendly

I've always loved the sonic signature of the Trident consoles, especially the A-Range, and to have that available to me on Venue is just a dream.

The Trident A-Range is my favorite desk to work on as its EQs are spectacularly musical. The Softube plug-in captures its unique color spot on.

Softube's Trident A-Range Discrete Equalizer is an amazingly warm EQ that adds a lot to my mixes. Although the true magic of it lies in the saturation knob. I can twist it up a bit to add a little extra character or really crank it and get a cool over-saturated sound that still is very pleasant.

I use the A-Range for all of my guitar channels. Sounds great and if I need to drive it a bit more there is always the saturation knob.

I had a guy over here and I pulled up the Trident and we both were like 'wow, that sounds amazing'. It's just a great plugin.

Doug Aldrich, Producer/Guitar wizard of Whitesnake

The trident eq is really musical and easy to use. I got to use the hardware again this summer and it totally stands up in the 'wow' stakes. Really great to make things sound in your face the high end is really sweet. The saturation is a really nice feature and can be great on kick drums, try it on a 808!

Stu Richardson, Bass Player/Producer/Mixer for Lostprophets

The Trident A Range is absolutely amazing! The best EQ on guitars HANDS DOWN! It's so hard to get bite out of a distorted guitar without having it be too abrasive, but with the Trident it's smooth and warm but cuts through perfectly. I'm blown away.

The A-Range plug-in captures all the tone and energy of the original modules. The Originals are hard to find and maintain but the plug-is easy to use. It's the perfect go to effect for an instant '70's Classic Rock Guitar Tone. This is the perfect solution to the unstable gear of that era. It's easy to use and doesn't go snap crackle in the middle of your session. It seems that the noise and artifacts is the only thing they left out of the plug-in. It works great on Snare Drums and Toms. The Saturation controls add even more tone and circuit compression color for drums. The filters are perfect for getting aggressive with the Eq and then cleaning up the ends of the spectrum. It's not hardware but it's certainly the way I remember these modules.

I have evaluated the Softube Trident A-Range equaliser plug-in at my studio with some very experienced recording engineers. After exhaustive listening tests with many different instruments and vocals, I am pleased to say that we all agree this is an incredibly accurate software recreation of my original A-Range design from 1971.

It exhibits all of the nuances of tone from the original, right down to the 'saturation' control which emulates the overdriven artifacts from the original when large amounts of equalisation are applied or the input is driven hard.

Well done to all the guys at Softube.

I can now setup for a session the way I used to when I had the desk. And the saturation is a great tool that, when used right, will provide some great results.

I am very happy. Great job Softube.

Flemming Rasmussen, Producer/Mixer/Engineer, Metallica, Richie Blackmore, Morbid Angel, Blind Guardian etc.

As ever, the engineers at Softube have applied their usual meticulous approach, so if you're a fan of the original Trident EQ, you're sure to like what they've done.

Softube has done an excellent job here, and its emulation sounds the part while being easy on the CPU. The EQ itself is great, while the inclusion of a saturation control adds a desirable extra dimension.

I have experienced nothing short of 'EQ porn' whilst testing this well designed minimum phase EQ on various material. [...] The acid test for me was when I ran a dead and clinical sampled Rhodes through it. It shimmered and sounded rich and not in the 'smearing frequencies' kind of way but in the 'harmonically structured' kind of way. [...] Ignore at your peril!

Eddie Bazil, Sample Craze

I was actually boosting the 5-6 kHz range (which is associated with harshness) but I wasn't having any harshness or weird mud competing with the vocals. Why? Because this EQ is just musical and beautiful. After that, I started using it on individual instruments and it works like a charm on everything. It makes EQing easy! [...] This is a must-have!
